Golden Jubilee Closing Ceremony: A Grand Finale

The Golden Jubilee Committee of the Faculty hosted a magnificent Closing Ceremony on 30 December 2025, marking the culmination of half a century of academic excellence. The stage was elegantly designed to represent the Faculty’s eight core academic disciplines, providing a meaningful and symbolic backdrop for the evening’s celebrations.

Honouring Excellence and Dedication: Following the opening of the Golden Jubilee Commemorative Fisheries Science Block and the new Faculty Boardroom, portraits of former Deans, who have shaped and guided the Faculty since its inception, were unveiled, paying tribute to their enduring legacy and leadership.

Jubilarian Recognition: A total of 75 staff members, including 23 academics, were honoured in recognition of 25 or more years of dedicated and distinguished service to the Faculty.

Celebrating Talent and Achievement: Medals were awarded to the winners of the Golden Jubilee Sports Carnival, alongside prizes for a diverse range of ten academic and creative competitions organised as part of the Jubilee celebrations.

A Vibrant Cultural Showcase: The event was attended by over 500 distinguished guests, including current staff and students, retired faculty members, former Vice-Chancellors and Deans, and representatives of the alumni. The evening was enlivened by outstanding student performances, featuring a graceful Welcome Dance, a captivating thematic dance drama, and a series of vocal presentations that showcased the creativity and artistic talent of the student community.

Commemorating the Legacy: A key highlight of the evening was the official launch of the Golden Jubilee Souvenir Magazine. This comprehensive 160-page publication meticulously chronicles the Faculty’s journey, highlighting major historical milestones, infrastructure development, academic achievements, curriculum evolution, and the impact of significant research and development initiatives. The magazine also records the Faculty’s remarkable achievement in attracting over one billion rupees in national and international R & D funding during the past five years, as well as securing numerous national and international honours—even amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent fuel and economic crises.

I sincerely thank all staff and stakeholders who contributed to the Faculty of Science Golden Jubilee events (2024–2025). I extend my special appreciation to the Organising Committees; the Faculty of Science Alumni Association (FoSAA); the Science Students’ Union (SSU); the student societies; the staff of the Finance Branch, Physical Education Unit and the Engineering Division; and my office team for their invaluable support and dedication.

Commemorating Fifty Years of Excellence in Science Education and Research

The Faculty of Science commenced its academic journey in 1974 with the introduction of courses in Mathematics and Statistics. In 1975, it expanded into the Biological and Physical Sciences with the establishment of five departments: Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, and Zoology.

To commemorate fifty years of Excellence in Science Education and Research, the Faculty’s community/stakeholders — including staff, students, their societies, and alumni associations — have organised a range of celebratory activities. These include the VINGNANAM Research Conference, the Golden Jubilee Celestia Awards Ceremony, STEM education outreach programmes, various sports tournaments, and e-resource development competitions. Furthermore, the Faculty of Science Alumni Association hosted a grand celebration to honour long-serving staff members, bringing together alumni from across the country and around the world, along with current faculty members and distinguished guests.

1.0 Third VINGNANAM Research Conference (VRC)

As part of the Faculty of Science’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations, the third VINGNANAM Research Conference (VRC), held under the auspices of the Jaffna University International Research Conferences (JUICE) series, was a tremendous success. The conference, which brought together esteemed researchers and scholars, including alumni from diverse disciplines, took place on September 6, 2024 at the faculty premises.

2.0 Golden Jubilee Commemorative Events
         Organised by the Alumni Association of the Faculty  

The Faculty of Science Alumni Association (FoSAA) hosted a grand celebration in honor of the Faculty’s Golden Jubilee, uniting alumni from across the globe, current faculty members, and distinguished guests. The association recognized former deans and academic and non-academic staff who had completed 25 years of service. A 270-page commemorative magazine was published to mark the occasion, featuring biographies of over fifteen distinguished former academics from the faculty.

3.0 Video/Photography competitions
          Organised by the Golden Jubilee Committee  

The Faculty Board of Science at its 204th meeting, held on September 18, 2024, approved several other key initiatives, including digitalization of faculty records and the promotion of STEAM education in the region. The Centre for Science Education, in collaboration with the Faculty’s Golden Jubilee Committee, organizes the following Video/Photography competitions among the faculty communities, staff/alumni/students.
